Children with Special Needs

We understand that children with special health care needs are unique. We have experience in providing individualized dental care to these patients.

Children with special health care needs (SHCN) may be more susceptible to oral disease due to their condition and require oral health care of a specialized nature. We have experience in providing dental care to patients with SHCN such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy. A child with SHCN can also include patients with Amelogenesis Imperfecta, Dentinogenesis Imperfecta and oral cancer.

Children with SHCN should keep healthy teeth and gums since it is an integral part of their general health and well-being. We are dedicated to providing the best dental care to this special population.

What We
Offer

01

Patient- and Family-Centered Care

Treating patients and families with dignity and respect.  Sharing complete and unbiased information.  Allowing patients and families to participate in care and decisions.  Collaborating with patients and families to the delivery of care and in facility and program design.

03

Preparing for your child's first visit

In order to best prepare for your child’s visit, we ask that you take a few steps beforehand to ensure the most seamless experience possible. This includes setting up an in-person consultation to review your child’s medical history, records, and other concerns you think we should know about. We also recommend that you show them photos of our office, create a brief story specifically covering what will happen before their visit, and only schedule when your child is not sick and does not require any immunizations.

02

Why special needs children should see a paediatric dentist

Paediatric dentists are dental specialists who receive extensive training in areas such as special needs dentistry, child psychology, child pharmacology, and paediatric sedation dentistry and behaviour management. They know how to explain procedures to patients using developmentally-appropriate language, strategies for managing dental anxiety, and how to properly coordinate care with patients’ paediatricians and other care providers.

04

Sedation Dentistry

In some cases, a child with special needs may need more support to feel comfortable during dental treatment. We offer nitrous oxide in our office so that your child feels safe and stays calm and comfortable. For children with extensive needs we also offer general anesthesia dentistry to ensure a positive experience.
